The French St. Martin Tourist Office has announced its upcoming participation in the 2022 edition of the Essence Festival of Culture, from June 30-July 3, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The festival is a multi-generational experience steeped in culture and equity.
As Saint Martin continues to celebrate 2022 as the “Year of Gastronomy”, the island will showcase two of its chefs, Kénila Hyman and Kareem Brooks, who will participate in a culinary demonstration showcasing traditional island cuisine on the Essence Food Stage on July 3 from 12:15-1 pm.
Kénila Hyman is the owner and head chef of Heritage Kitchen, a company based on her family’s legacy that aims to highlight Saint Martin’s culture through culinary art. Inspired by her father who was also a chef, Hyman offers traditional dishes with a modern twist. She enjoys creating fusions with all types of créole specialties.
Kareem Brooks, also known as Chef B, was born in Saint Martin. At the age of 13, he began his formal culinary training and, after three years, moved to Paris for further studies. Soon after, he founded Chef B’s Cooking Services.
A delegation from the tourism office will also accompany the chefs to meet with Essence executives and explore larger partnerships in the future.
Saint Martin is known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean featuring over 350 restaurants. This year, the island will welcome its next gastronomy festival from November 11-22, 2022.
