New Travel Resources Released for Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights

The Maryland Office of Tourism has published a new travel guide and web content for "Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights" and the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The content helps travelers discover the state’s attractions, scenic byways, outdoor recreational opportunities, and more.

Each site listed in the guide interprets stories of Marylanders’ struggle for equality. These are the locations where protests and sit-ins took place, where court cases were fought and where people gained equal access to public amenities. Markers and exhibits describe the events that took place. At other locations, museums and guided tours tell riveting tales of the journey toward justice. The map will assist visitors in further discovering the region where the site is located.

New web content has been curated with sites to learn more about the stories of activism and heroism that created a lasting impact on our communities and society. Sites can be viewed online in collections by three regions: Central, Capital/Southern and Eastern Shore. Suggested travel itineraries are also available, providing detailed information on sites to best plan visits to Baltimore and Annapolis. Additionally, visitors to VisitMaryland.org can learn more about locals who made an impact and their contributions during the civil rights movement.

The free guide can be ordered online or by calling 1-800-719-5900, downloaded online or picked up at Maryland Welcome Centers. The eight centers are located along major highways throughout each region of the state and offer a range of additional printed brochures and guides produced by the state, county and city tourism offices, and local tourism business. Additionally, travel counselors are available at each location to provide personalized assistance.
