To combat the state’s reputation as a place that isn’t safe for or welcoming of LGBTQ+ travelers, Visit Lauderdale has launched the "No End to the Rainbows" social media campaign, which aims to reaffirm Greater Fort Lauderdale's “unwavering dedication to promoting inclusivity and welcoming ‘Everyone Under the Sun.’"
Greater Fort Lauderdale says it is dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors. The "No End to the Rainbows" campaign aims to highlight the stories, achievements and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, showcasing the region's rich cultural tapestry and the array of experiences available to visitors of all backgrounds. The campaign will comprise a series of engaging social media posts, vibrant imagery and compelling stories from local LGBTQ+ individuals, businesses and organizations. Residents and visitors are encouraged to share their own scenic images of rainbows in Greater Fort Lauderdale using the hashtag #EveryoneUnderTheSun to show support for our inclusive destination.
As part of this initiative, Visit Lauderdale will also collaborate with local LGBTQ+ organizations and influencers to further amplify the message of inclusivity and promote Greater Fort Lauderdale as a premiere destination that celebrates diversity.
That said, in 2023, three civil rights groups—including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, League of United Latin American Citizens and Equality Florida—issued travel advisories for Florida. The groups warned Black Americans, members of the Latinx community and LGBTQ+ travelers about the potential dangers of visiting Florida.
“We pride ourselves on welcoming every visitor with the same warmth and friendliness, no matter where they are from, what they believe, whom they love or what their abilities are,” said Dana Young, president and CEO of Visit Florida, at the time.
Safehome.org’s 2024 LGBTQ+ State Safety Report Cards, which grades each state on a score of 100, ranked Florida second-to-last among the safest states for LGBTQ+ people. (Only South Dakota fared worse in the rankings.)
Queer Adventures also lists Florida among “the worst states for LGBTQ travelers.”
