Arctic expedition company Adventure Canada is collaborating with Parks Canada to take travelers to the wreckage site of the Franklin Expedition’s HMS Erebus as part of their Into the Northwest Passage and Out of the Northwest Passage 2019 expeditions.
The HMS Erebus and HMS Terror have captivated the interest of aspiring explorers everywhere since the last confirmed sightings of the two ships over 170 years ago. What happened is still a mystery, but some knowledge has been garnered through Inuit testimony and research on both wrecks.
Following the first failed attempt to find the lost vessels in 1848, approximately 40 expeditions had looked for them across the years before a Parks Canada-led team located the HMS Erebus in 2014. Two years later, the HMS Terror was located.
Located in the Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site in Nunavut, the remains of the HMS Erebus lie over 30,000 feet south of the final resting spot of HMS Terror.
Adventure Canada secured annual partnerships with Parks Canada in 2017 and 2018 to bring guests to the Erebus site, but the company had trouble getting to it because of extreme weather and ice barriers.
Adventure Canada will make its first attempt to visit the Erebus site on Into the Northwest Passage, August 17 to September 2, 2019, and its second upon its journey Out of the Northwest Passage, September 2-18, 2019.
In other Adventure Canada news, the company is bringing back its Ireland Circumnavigation cruise. The new itinerary will run June 9-20, 2019 and take guests to see Tory Island, the Cliffs of Moher, Belfast and more.
