Carnival Cruise rolled into a small Virginia town this week on the hunt for a local teenager and his coveted Snapchat handle @CarnivalCruise.
The company surprised 15-year-old Darian Lipscomb at his Prospect, Virginia, home on Tuesday night after peppering the town with signs asking "Hey Prospect, does anyone know Darian?"
It offered to trade Lipscomb a free trip to Barcelona for his family aboard its newest ship, Carnival Horizon, in exchange for his Snapchat handle, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. The net worth of the trip is about $5,000.
Organisers say Lipscomb will receive customised surprises throughout the trip, which will be documented on the cruise’s social channels.
The company said the trade was a fun way to claim the handle and reward a ’superfan’, the Dispatch reported.
He created the Snapchat handle @CarnivalCruise in 2012 and has used it to share snaps of his cruise experiences including tubing and zip-lining.“When I was nine years old, I went on a cruise and got really excited and wanted to share it with my friends,” Darian told the newspaper.
“I answered the door, walked outside and saw my name on a big truck. I was really surprised,” Darian said.
He accepted the offer and on Saturday, he and his family will head to Barcelona for the maiden voyage of the ship.
Darian has not yet decided what to choose for his new handle.
“I’ll have to think up another name. Maybe another company name,” he said.
