Carnival Corporation & plc has announced it was named a CES 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree for its OceanMedallion technology. The OceanMedallion is a wearable device that enables hassle-free payment, keyless and personalized stateroom access, frictionless embarkation, on-demand services and more.
The CES Innovation Awards celebrate outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products. A panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the trade media judge products based on their design, functionality, consumer appeal and engineering.
The Medallion device works by connecting a guest’s unique digital identity with the ship’s Experience Internet of Things (xIoT) ecosystem. The Medallion and Carnival’s xIoT technology have already rolled out aboard the Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess.
The most basic function of the Medallion is its role as guests’ new door key, automatically unlocking doors and soon providing personalized greetings. Ordering through their smart phone, guests also can use the Medallion to order and pay for food, with crew bringing it directly to them at locations throughout the ship.
The ship also features select portals throughout the ship for guests to make use of some of the Medallion’s other functions. The technology allows guests to map out directions to locations throughout the ship as well as find lost friends, family and kids. These portals also provide access to a variety of entertainment options, including gambling games, on-demand streaming and kids’ entertainment.
