Holland America Line received it 15th ship, Nieuw Statendam, with a hand-over ceremony at Fincantieri’s Marghera, Italy shipyard. The ship has now set sail for Civitavecchia, Italy, a coastal town outside of Rome, where it will begin its first voyage December 5.
After its transatlantic crossing from Civitavecchia, Nieuw Statendam will spend a full season sailing Caribbean itineraries out of Fort Lauderdale. The ship’s official naming ceremony will take place there, in Fort Lauderdale, on February 2.
After its season in the Caribbean, Nieuw Statendam will return to Europe, to its summer homeport of Amsterdam in May. Here it will offer a lineup of northern Europe, Baltic and Iceland cruises. In September the ship will return to the Mediterranean where it will offer cruises out of Civitavecchia.
The 99,902-ton Nieuw Statendam offers 1,377 guest accommodations and can hold up to 2,666 guests. Its design is similar to Holland America Line’s first Pinnacle Class ship, the Koningsdam, but with its own personal style crafted by hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany and designer and architect Bjørn Storbraaten.
Nieuw Statendam will offer several new dining options including the French seafood brasserie Rudi’s Sel de Mer; the new sushi experience Nami Sushi, as part of the ship’s pan-Asian restaurant Tamarind; and a new exclusive restaurant for guests in the company’s Club Orange program.
