Laura Dekker Named Godmother of Hanseatic Inspiration

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has announced that Laura Dekker, the youngest woman to circumnavigate the globe solo, will be the godmother of the cruise line’s newest expedition ship, Hanseatic Inspiration. On Friday October 11, Dekker will name the expedition ship at a ceremony in the Port of Hamburg.

The ceremony, organized by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and hosted by science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar, will take place on the water, as well as on and around the new ship. Invited guests will board the Hapag-Llyod’s Zodiacs to watch live from the water as Dekker names the new ship. Other launches on the expedition’s rubber boats will also be made available to watch the ceremony.

According to Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Dekker was chosen as the godmother of Hanseatic Inspiration due to her “enthusiasm for nature, her spirit of adventure and her love of the sea.” Dekker has sailed over 50,000 nautical miles and is the founder of the Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation, a foundation that aims to inspire young people through sailing projects. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises supports the foundation.

The 230-passenger Hanseatic Inspiration will sail the Antarctic around Spitsbergen. The PC6 ice class passenger ship is fitted with cold ironing and an SCR catalytic converter, and it will use low-pollutant marine gas oil fuel.

Hanseatic Inspiration is the second of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ three new ships in the cruise line’s expedition fleet. The first, Hanseatic Nature, launched in May while the third, Hanseatic Spirit, is set to launch in 2021.
