MSC Cruises has announced that it will move MSC Opera’s previously planned winter 2024-25 season in the Red Sea to the Canary Islands. The Red Sea sailings were canceled in light of the current risk to shipping in that region. MSC Opera, instead, will operate seven-night itineraries with six ports of call between November 3, 2024 and March 16, 2025. The ship will depart Santa Cruz de Tenerife for Las Palmas, Puerto del Rosario, Funchal, Santa Cruz de la Palma and Arrecife, before returning to Tenerife.
Destination highlights include:
- Las Palmas – The capital city of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands is known for Las Canteras, a beach with crystal-clear waters; the Casa de Colón, a museum highlighting the history of the Canary Islands; and the city’s historical quarter, Vegueta.
- Arrecife – The capital city of Lanzarote is known for its volcanic landscapes, beaches and cultural heritage. Key attractions include Castillo de San Gabriel, the ancient fortress and home of Arrecife’s history museum; the Charco San Ginés lagoon with its many fishing houses and an array of bars and restaurants; and Timanfaya National Park, located outside of the city on the island.
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife – Known for its carnival, landscapes, beaches and historical landmarks, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the port capital of Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s seven Canary Islands. Key attractions include the Plaza de Espana, and the white wave auditorium and architectural marvel, the Auditorio de Tenerife. In proximity to the city is El Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the volcanic Mount Teide is located.
- Funchal – The capital of the Portuguese island Madeira is famed for its picturesque bay, wine and botanical gardens. Well-known attractions include the city’s Zona Velha historical center; the Madeira Botanical Garden; and the nearby Cabo Girão, one of the highest cliffs in Europe.
- Puerto del Rosario – The capital of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands offers a wealth of attractions for visitors, famed for its streets adorned with sculptures and art. Whether it’s strolling through the harbor brimming with shops and restaurants or visiting nearby beaches, there’s an array of experiences to enjoy. The town also serves as a gateway to Fuerteventura’s natural landscapes and sites, including the Corralejo sand dunes.
- Santa Cruz de la Palma – The capital city of La Palma in the Canary Islands captivates visitors with its blend of historical and natural attractions. From strolling the city’s cobblestone streets and admiring the architecture in the Plaza España, dating back to the Renaissance, to visiting key landmarks such as the 16th-century El Salvador Church, this destination offers rich and varied experiences for all. The city is also a great starting point to discover the island’s attractions including the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, known for its volcanic crater and forests.
The new itinerary also offers flexible embarkation options, including Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Sundays, Las Palmas on Mondays, Madeira for Funchal on Thursdays or Fridays and Arrecife on Saturdays. The Canary Islands are easily accessible with regular international flights to Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
