Royal Caribbean has trademarked a potential name for a future new cruise ship: the Metropolis of the Seas. As first reported by the unofficial Royal Caribbean Blog, the cruise line registered the name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as of October 1, allowing it to potentially use the name for one of the cruise ships it has on order.
The next cruise ship set to launch for Royal Caribbean, following this year’s debut of the Oasis-class Symphony of the Seas, is the Spectrum of the Seas. Launching in 2019, that ship will be the first in Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum Ultra class, which is being billed as an evolution of the line’s Quantum class. That new ship will be focused on the China cruise market.
After that, Royal Caribbean has a number of other, as-yet-unnamed cruise ships coming up over the next few years. In 2020, the line will launch a second Quantum Ultra class ship, while in 2021 it will add a fifth Oasis-class ship to its fleet.
In 2022 and 2024, Royal Caribbean will debut an entirely new class of ship, the Icon. Details on the new Icon class are still under wraps, although the line has previously said it will be powered by cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cells.
