Dunton Hot Springs, the Relais & Châteaux resort located within the San Juan Mountains, has unveiled Chuck’s Cabin, the latest addition to the property’s collection of luxury accommodations. The restored and redesigned cabin was previously used as staff housing and sits on the edge of the property, perched overlooking the Dolores River. With its addition, Chuck’s Cabin is the first new guest cabin to join Dunton Hot Springs since its opening in 2001.
Chuck’s Cabin is named after Chuck Roscio—one of three brothers that purchased the town of Dunton in 1918—who once lived there and served as the town’s bartender. After the mining community deserted Dunton that year, Chuck and his relatives operated the property as a cattle ranch, and later increased their ranch holdings to about 500 acres. Over the decades, it also served as a dude ranch for tourists before being sold and transformed into Dunton Hot Springs.
Though more than 130 years old, Chuck’s Cabin is the newest renovated accommodation on the property, completely redesigned by London-based architecture and interior design studio Waldo Works and locally based Kimble Construction in Dunton’s signature rustic-chic style. The cabin’s new look remains true to the original structure's integrity, yet upgraded with luxurious and modern amenities across its four bedrooms and living spaces. Waldo Works ensured each room has a distinct color palette and bespoke furnishings throughout the cabin.
Custom wood paneling accents, patterned wallpaper, and fabrics complement the original wood construction to the most minute detail, enhancing the patina of the existing materials that have lived at Dunton for over a century.
One of the largest accommodations available at Dunton is the 1,620-square-foot multi-level Chuck’s Cabin, which is perfect for families or groups of friends and has three floors and a daylight basement. On the main floor, guests enjoy a Queen bedroom accommodation with an en-suite bathroom. On the top floor, a King bedroom offers an en-suite bathroom with a luxurious soaking tub, complemented by a spacious rain shower. The daylight basement offers two bedrooms with bunk beds in each, complete with a large bathroom with a separate tub and shower. The living room offers a wood-burning stove with large windows offering views of the mountain surroundings and the Dolores River.
