South African professional golfer and 2019 Presidents Cup Captain Ernie Els has signed on to become a global brand ambassador for Peninsula Papagayo. The region along the north Pacific coast of Costa Rica is the site for various hotels, resorts, homes and villas.
The partnership will begin with Peninsula Papagayo affiliating with the golfer’s portfolio of golf clubs and resorts, which is known as The Els Group. Els will also host an annual Peninsula Papagayo Member/Guest Invitational with proceeds going to local schools. The first tournament will be in early 2019 on an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Arnold Palmer.
The Peninsula Papagayo community includes Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo, Prieta Beach Club and Marina Papagayo. Peninsula Papagayo is a private 1,400-acre area located a half hour away from Liberia International Airport.
Ernie Els is a World Golf Hall of Famer and four-time Major Champion. The Els Group, formed in 2000, includes Ernie Els Design, The Els Club Collection, Els Performance Golf Academy, Els Club Estates, Els Iced Coffee, Big Easy Winebar & Grill and Ernie Els Wines.
Els and his companies have won a variety of awards. These include ‘Designer of the Year’ at the World Golf Awards in 2015 and ‘Best New Golf Course in the World’ for The Els Club Teluk Datai in 2014.
