With Australia set to open its borders for international travel for the first time in two years on February 21, Intrepid Travel is set to launch brand new Australia adventures for tourists.
The new offerings are designed to support local communities, especially those that may have been affected by travel restrictions. The tours offer meaningful First Nations experiences, celebrating the cultures and histories of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and include more active and wellness itineraries, as well as trips that highlight local food and wine.
Among the adventures, the “Premium Kimberley & Bungle Bungles” is a nine-day tour. Guests can find out what makes the Kimberley region special and learn about the First Nations history of the area from traditional custodians, take guided walks that illuminate local geography, swim in gorges filled with clear waters and under waterfalls, and hike through red-rock formations and palm oases. From Windjana Gorge and Purnululu National Park to vast El Questro station, Kimberley has a host of attractions.
The “Premium Red Centre” is a six-day tour where travelers will be joined by a local leader on an adventure through the outback, discovering the wonders of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Alice Springs and Kings Canyon. The tour provides an opportunity to learn about the connection between the land and Aboriginal people and enjoy some local dishes using native bush ingredients.
The five-day “Trek the Larapinta Trail” will take travelers on one of Australia’s lesser known bushwalking and trekking routes. Travelers will hike along the red rock slopes of the West MacDonnell Ranges and enjoy the time to appreciate the importance of this place to the local people over thousands of years. The tour will give travelers a chance to hike to shadowed gorges, snaking riverbanks, open plains and towering mountains filled with a rich diversity of animals and plants, taking in sights like Ormiston Gorge and an ascent of Mt. Sonder.
Another brand new adventure is the five-day “Margaret River and Albany Adventure” from Perth; this tour is an immersive First Nations cultural experience, giving visitors a snapshot into the history of the land and its people. The group will take a short bushwalk identifying traditional medicines in plants and hear a didgeridoo performance inside the cave. There’s also a chance to taste wine, cheese and chocolate and spend a unique night surrounded by kangaroos and emus at Donnelly River Village.
