Major Dave Walker has been appointed as new director of Visitor Safety and Experience by Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett.
His duty is to continue the review of an initial report from the recent island wide security audit of the tourism sector. Major Walker will then hand-in a final report with recommendations on how to proceed into the winter tourist season in December.
Major (Retd) Dave Walker spent twenty-three years in various operational and strategic capacities in the military. He dealt with regional security matter with the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) while serving as a Military Advisor.
Major Walker holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and a Master’s in Business Administration. Both come from the University of the West Indies.
In 2018, Minister Bartlett ordered a security audit of hotel properties across the island. It was coordinated by The TPDCo—which oversees maintaining quality assurance within the destination—with support from internationally recognized security expert, Dr. Peter Tarlow in order to identify gaps and ensure Jamaica is safe and secure for both locals and tourists.
In other Jamaica news, the country is rolling out new sustainability initiatives. This is starting with the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, along with an agricultural sector that aims to be climate resilient.
