Following the devastation of Hurricane Michael this October, Mexico Beach, Florida, reopened its welcome center December 4. Located next to the original Mexico Beach Welcome Center, the structure will serve as a meeting place for visitors, community members and workers interested in rebuilding the town.
“This stretch of sand is home or a home-away-from-home to so many and our temporary Welcome Center now provides everyone with a location to stop by, say ‘hello’ and feel the resiliency of Mexico Beach,” said president of the Mexico Beach Community Development Council Kimberly Shoaf.
The Mexico Beach community has been hard at work rebuilding. A massive beach clean-up is cleaning the area of debris. Construction and cleaning crews are repairing salvageable structures. A variety of properties are still being assessed to see what the next best steps would be and efforts are being made to start clearing the damaged canal.
So far, three restaurants have re-opened to serve workers and returning locals. The first to begin accepting customers again, Caribbean Coffee, has its full menu available. Mango Marley’s operates a food truck in its parking lot and serves breakfast and lunch daily in addition to meals for the nearby Tyndall Air Force Base. Rustic Sand’s Grill offers breakfast and lunch three days a week and hosts live music on Fridays and Saturdays.
