Summer has just begun. To kickstart the new season, Vero Beach, Florida, is promoting itself and rolling out several updates. Here is what the destination has to offer.
New at Vero Beach
Jackie Robinson Training Complex — At the complex, which consists of the 6,500-seat Holman Stadium, several fields and indoor baseball facilities, visitors can attend a series of summer events, including the Hank Aaron Invitational (July 21-August 2), an athletic/instructional event for top prep baseball players, and the Labor Day Beach Bash youth baseball tournament (August 31-September 2), along with additional events.
Downtown Vero Beach — The Downtown Vero Beach Mural Project is commissioning large-scale murals on exterior walls. Four pieces out of eight have been finished so far. Over the past 10 years, downtown Vero has become more artsy, and now features a Historic Downtown Arts District and a First Friday Gallery Stroll.
The Historic Jungle Trail — This eight-mile dirt road hugs Indian River Lagoon. It was built in the 1920s as a means for transporting citrus crops. Travelers could use fat-tire bikes to traverse the trail or drive a car on it very slowly. Some of the trail is adjacent to housing developments.
PADL — PADL, a new paddleboard rental station, has opened at South Beach Place, an 18-suite boutique hotel in Vero. PADL is similar to an urban bike share. Riders can download the PADL app, then rent and unlock a paddleboard from their smartphones. The app will provide a trip summary after the cruising is over.
The Citrus Grillhouse re-opens — The Citrus Grillhouse was renovated, rebranded as Citrus, and re-opened in the spring after incurring damages from a fire. The new eatery is “very modern, contemporary, light and airy,” says chef/co-owner Scott Varricchio. The menu has changed completely.
Round Island Park — Round Island Beach Park features natural beach on the Atlantic along with a display on how WWII soldiers trained in preparation for D-Day. Round Island Riverside Park, across A1A, is extensive and borders the Indian River. It is an ideal kayak/canoe launch and includes a three-story observation tower. Manatees can be spotted swimming in coves around the small island.
