Over 50 people at an outdoor music festival near the Mandalay Bay Las Vegas were killed Sunday night in the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history.
CNN reports that about 400 people were injured in the shooting and ensuing stampede when the gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay.

In its latest statement Mandalay Bay reports that law enforcement requested that they put hotels in the vicinity on lockdown to ensure guest safety, and that they would provide more information as it becomes available.

“We are all saddened by the events unfolding on the Strip,” the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) said on its official Twitter account. “Out thoughts are with the victims, families, and first responders.”
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the shooting took place during the Route 91 Harvest Festival, during a performance by country music artist Jason Aldean.
According to the New York Times, police found the suspect dead in his room at the Mandalay Bay. He is believed to be the only attacker.
“We believe the individual killed himself prior to our entry,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sherrif Joseph Lombardo told CNN.
Lombardo described the suspect as a “local resident” to the New York Times, and said that his background and motivations remained unknown, predicting a “long and tedious investigation.”
