Several media outlets are reporting that more than 200 people had to be rescued after a severe weekend storm stranded them on the North Shore of Kauai.
According to Time, more than 340 people were evacuated this week and over the weekend after heavy rain brought flooding, mudslides and power outages to the neighborhood.
“Damage is very extensive in this area,” Hawaii Governor David Ige posted on his Twitter account around 10:30 p.m. Monday night. “The immediate problem is access. Several landslides are blocking roads into the communities. Crews are working to restore access to the Hanalei District, but it will take some time. We are establishing landing zones for aircraft.”
CNN is reporting that Ige's office said on Monday that emergency rescue crews have evacuated 152 people by helicopter, 121 by bus and others by water.
According to a Facebook post sent Monday night by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), “The Division of State Parks is coordinating with Kauai County and State Civil Defense personnel on prioritizing reconnaissance missions. All available helicopters on Kauai are being managed based on immediate safety concerns.”
According to the DLNR, the following state parks have been closed: Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, Haena State Park, Polihale State Park and portions of Wailua River State Park.
The Honolulu Star Advertiser is reporting that power outages still continue for Wainiha and Haena residents, but power has been restored to some in Hanalei. The Hawaii Department of Transportation is working to clear mud and debris from at least eight landslides on Kuhio Highway, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser report.
