Trinidad and Tobago Shuts Down TDC Ahead of Replacement

Trinidad and Tobagos Tourism Development Company (TDC) has shut down, and the destinations Ministry of Tourism will manage a number of the organizations functions temporarily.

Tourism stakeholders and the general public are hereby advised that the Tourism Development Company (TDC) has, without prejudice, ceased operations, the Ministry of Tourism said in a written release. Effective Monday, August 21, 2017, the Ministry of Tourism will manage the following tourism portfolios previously under the remit of the TDC on an interim basis:

  • Tourism Investment and Incentives
  • Cruise Passenger Visitor Services
  • Airport Visitor Information Services
  • Sites and Attractions – Maracas Beach Facility, Las Cuevas Beach Facility, Vessigny Beach Facility, Manzanilla Beach Facility and the La Brea Pitch Lake

This past March, the Trinidad and Tobago government and cabinet announced that they would create three separate entities aimed at driving tourism to the destination:

  1. The Tourism Trinidad Destination Management Company Limited (Tourism Trinidad)
  2. The Tobago Tourism Agency
  3. Trinidad and Tobago Tourism Regulatory Licensing Authority

The Ministry of Tourism said that those requiring tourism related services can contact the Stakeholder Relations Unit at 625-0963/624-1403 Ext. 227 and 251 or email stakeholderrelations@tourism.gov.tt.

According to Trinidad and Tobago Newsday, Trinidad Tourism will employ fewer people than the TDC, approximately 50 people versus just over 120 people. The new organizations main business activity will comprise developing and marketing business, conference and meetings product of Port of Spain, the development of niche products, including culture, festivals and sports and the provision of business advisory services.
