Tropical Storm Norma and Hurricane Otis are moving away from the Baja California Peninsula and Los Cabos in Mexico.
According to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center, Norma is now a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. It is expected to continue moving away from Baja California Sur, gradually weakening into a tropical depression by Tuesday. Dangerous surf and rip currents are likely to persist in Baja California and southwestern Mexico through Tuesday.
Hurricane Otis, meanwhile, has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and is expected to weaken rapidly, moving north before making a turn to the west and southwest by late Tuesday. The storm is producing no hazards affecting land.
Impact on Flights
Tropical Storm Norma has prompted a number of airlines to issue change waivers.
American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta and Southwest Airlines have all issued change waivers for customers traveling through San Jose Cabo / Cabo San Lucas (SJD). American Airlines customers must have bought their ticket by September 14 and be scheduled to travel through September 18. Rebooked travel must take place by September 22 between the same city pair in the same cabin (or pay the difference).
United Airlines and Delta customers must have been scheduled to travel through September 18 and be able to travel through September 22. United Airlines will also allow customers to reschedule a new flight after September 22 with no change fee, but a difference in fare may apply.
Southwest Airlines customers scheduled to travel through September 18 can rebook in the original class of service or travel standby within 14 days of their original date of travel.
