Sweden beckons travelers with a range of experiences this summer. Several new and trendy hotels in Sweden that have recently opened, or are scheduled to open soon, offer experiences such as family entertainment, sustainable dining and outdoor adventures. A holiday in Sweden is even more accessible now with United Airlines’ seasonal daily direct flight between Newark and Stockholm. Additionally, Stockholm’s Frantzén restaurant has recently secured its place atop the list of the world’s best restaurants, blending Swedish traditions with innovative cuisine using locally sourced ingredients.
New and Trendy Hotels
Liseberg Grand Curiosa Hotel, Gothenburg (Opened in April 2023) – Located next to Sweden’s largest amusement park, Liseberg, this family hotel offers a delightful experience for both young and adult guests. The star-shaped building has 457 rooms, each with at least five beds. The hotel offers a lobby slide, a pony carousel in the café, a speakeasy cocktail bar and a roof terrace overlooking the amusement park.
Kläpphagen Koster, West Sweden (Opened in May 2023) – This boutique B&B, restaurant and brewery is nestled on the Koster Islands near Strömstad. Guests can choose from unique accommodation options such as glamping tents or a two-story garden house. The restaurant focuses on sustainability with all food cooked over an open fire, providing an environmentally conscious dining experience.
Hotell Billingehus, Skövde (Opened in May 2023) – Having opened its doors for the first time in 1970, Hotell Billingehus underwent extensive renovations over the past year and a half. Perched atop mount Billingen, the hotel offers 240 rooms, multiple restaurants and bars, as well as nearby relaxing baths, hiking trails and ski slopes.
The Plaza Rooftop Hotel, Västerås (Opened in June 2023) – Collaborating with Hästens, one of Sweden’s bed suppliers, the Plaza Rooftop Hotel offers a unique experience on a roof terrace. Guests can choose from a range of activities such as bungee jumping, hot air balloon rides and private gin tasting. Rates include a three-course dinner, welcome drink, minibar access, spa entrance and a gym session at Skygym. The hotel is open from late June 2023 to September.
Scandic Go, Stockholm (Opening in September) – Fresh, urban, sustainable and price-conscious, this new concept is in response to the growing demand from a new generation of hotel guests. This concept complements Scandic’s current offering in the middle and upper-middle segments of the hospitality industry, targeting a more price-conscious demographic. The first Scandic Go will be in central Stockholm and opens September 5, following a renovation of an existing Scandic property on Upplandsgatan.
Clarion Hotel Draken, Gothenburg (Opening fall 2023) – This hotel will debut as the city’s tallest hotel building. This iconic cinema-turned-hotel will house 474 rooms and feature Gothenburg’s highest sky bar. With a central location in the Järntorget district, the hotel aims to host concerts, shows and other live events.
STF Undersvik Farm Hotel & Hostel, Hälsingland (Opening fall 2023) – This farm opens its doors to the public after serving as a campsite for over 80 years. Situated by Lake Ljusnan, the dog-friendly hotel and hostel will offer 130 beds across five buildings. Guests will have easy access to outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, fishing, bicycling and ice skating.
Hotel Fratelli, Karlstad (Opening in April 2024) – With 85 rooms, a restaurant, bar, and orangery, this property aims to be a sanctuary in central Karlstadit, and provides an escape from everyday life.
Airlift and More
United Airlines has launched a new seasonal non-stop route between Newark Liberty International Airport and Stockholm Arlanda Airport, operating daily. Originally planned for 2022, the airline had to postpone the launch due to aircraft availability constraints.
United Airlines is the third carrier to offer flights between New York and Stockholm, following in the footsteps of Delta and SAS. With the addition of United’s new route, American travelers will have even more options when planning their trip to Sweden.
In addition, renowned Stockholm restaurant Frantzén has claimed the top spot on the list of the world’s best restaurants. Helmed by Chef Björn Frantzén, the restaurant blends Swedish traditions with contemporary techniques.
