ATHENS – Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis both addressed the public on Wednesday, May 20, unveiling new measures for travel and tourism. Health officials will conduct sample coronavirus tests at Greek airports and therefore it was decided that there is no need for a COVID-19 (coronavirus) test before arrival in the country. There will also be no 14-day quarantine for inbound travelers to Greece.
Seasonal hotels will reopen on June 15 (two weeks earlier than originally planned), while all-year hotels will open June 1st, as announced in previous reopening updates.
International flights (non-European Union) will resume as of July 1; flights between EU countries will gradually resume as of June 15. Flights will initially only land in Athens International Airport when services resumes on June 15 but will eventually extend to all the airports as of July 1.
This week, Greece reopened its museums and archaeological sites, lifted travel restrictions towards the mainland, and the island of Crete, while sea travel also resumed with ferry passengers limited to 50 percent normal capacity. While travel to other Greek islands (apart from Crete) and between the islands is currently allowed strictly to owners and their employees of businesses that have reopened, these restrictions are also expected to be lifted on May 25.
With the situation in Greece improving substantially, officials are also eager to begin bringing other facets of public life back to normalcy. Restaurants and cafes in Greece will be allowed to reopen on May 25, one week earlier than originally announced.
We will continue to bring all the latest updates as they are published.
