Three of Bay Gardens Resorts’ five properties have become the first from St. Lucia to achieve Green Globe’s Gold Member certification. Bay Gardens Beach Resort and Spa, Bay Gardens Hotel and Bay Gardens Inn received the distinction after five consecutive years of passing Green Globe’s sustainability standards.
Sanovnik Destang, Bay Gardens Resorts’ executive director, said the hotel group is working on certifying its two other properties, Bay Gardens Marina Haven and Waters Edge by Bay Gardens Resorts, both of which just joined the company last year.
Bay Gardens Resorts has taken numerous steps to reduce its impact on the environment. The company has reduced guestroom energy use by 15 percent by installing GEM Link occupancy sensors. It has banned the use of styrofoam products at all its properties. Just last November, the hotel group replaced all plastic products with biodegradable alternatives. Other changes include installing more energy efficient air conditioning units, moving to LED lighting and switching to a farm-to-table menu.
Green Globe awards certification to travel and tourism companies that meet more than 50 percent of its criteria. Divided into four categories (sustainable management, social/economic, cultural heritage and environmental), the group’s standards range from complying with all relevant laws and producing accurate promotional materials to purchasing sustainable products and exclusively using native species for landscaping.
