Beachfront Hotel, The Nevada, Opens in York, Maine

The Nevada, a 21-key luxury beachfront hotel, has opened in the town of York, ME. Located on the southernmost tip of Maine, just over an hour outside of Boston, The Nevada is the latest project from the team behind The Viewpoint, a luxury waterfront hotel, also located in Maine. It is owned by husband-and-wife hoteliers and York residents Joe Lipton and Michelle Friar.

Opening in a prime location on Long Sands Beach, The Nevada marks the a revival of a 70-year-old motel property of the same name. Originally built in 1951, The Nevada was one of the first motels to open in Maine. It was named after a U.S. navy ship that the first owner served on in World War II, the USS Nevada, and he even designed the motel to resemble the flybridge of a battleship, a structural design that new owners Lipton and Friar have maintained in its new iteration. The original motel stayed under family ownership until it closed in 2021 after struggling through the pandemic, after which Lipton and Friar purchased it.

The Nevada was designed by CR Design in collaboration with Lipton and Friar. The team kept the original curved, L-shape structure inspired by the decks of the USS Nevada, but added a third story, which mirrors the existing mid-century architectural style. The curved building has a wrap-around deck and 21 king-size bedrooms, each with a private terrace affording views of the beach. The mid-century modern bathrooms in each room are outfitted with glass showers.

Additional amenities include beach chair and umbrella rentals, van service to The Viewpoint’s nearby seasonal al fresco restaurant A Little Auk, as well as the fitness center, pool and The Baths, a new spa at The Viewpoint, besides Stones Throw, the husband-and-wife duo’s nearby hotel and restaurant.

Lulu’s is the new restaurant and tiki bar located inside The Nevada. The 75-seat indoor-outdoor restaurant includes a 11-seat indoor-outdoor bar area and two-tier decks for outdoor seating. The outdoor dining space sports fire pits. The restaurant offers a tropical-inspired menu, while the beverage list comprises cocktails designed to be enjoyed beachside.

A key part of the renovation also included making the building more eco-friendly. Since The Nevada is located in a flood zone, the team put the building on stilts to raise it three-and-a-half feet out of the flood zone. They also added more energy efficient systems including heat pumps (for heating and air conditioning) in each room and on-demand hot water heaters with a recirculating pump. The Nevada is a member of the local Green Alliance and donates a portion from each stay to Giving Green, which directs funding to evidence-backed projects. Like their other properties, The Nevada works with Clean The World and uses Blueland cleaning products, commercial composting and bamboo paper products.
