Dubrovnik hotels don't generally encourage families with children, preferring instead to cater for the romantic couple's market. But if you look beyond the Old Town, along the coast, you'll find several big modern waterside hotels with extensive facilities, such as beaches, pools and sports amenities. Of the hotels listed, all have kids' clubs and offer services such as babysitting. Two are outside Dubrovnik (Sun Gardens in Orašac and Hotel Croatia in Cavtat), but both are well connected to the town.

If you're after a chill-out seaside holiday with swimming and sports activities, this location is idyllic: the hotel is set in landscaped grounds overlooking the Adriatic. There's a Sports Academy training football, tennis, water polo and basketball (for seven to 15 year-olds) with occasional celebrity sportspeople and a medal and certificate to take home. Families looking to wind down from an active day can head to the lovely beach (with sublime views over the Elaphiti islands) or one of the two family-friendly pools. The Marco Polo kids' club offers games, activities and trips, so parents can have some time alone.
