The oldest family-run resort in the Caribbean, The Buccaneer, is getting ready for two fitness events, including The St. Croix Coral Reef Swim on Sunday, November 11, 2018, and the “Beauty & The Beast” Triathlon on Sunday, December 2, 2018. U.S. residents do not need a passport to visit and participate in the races in this destination, which is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Coral Reef Swim, held annually each November, offers experiences for all levels of swimmers. The race has three distances for competitors to choose from: one mile, two miles and five miles. Participants will swim through blue water and coral reefs for all distance competitions before ending at The Buccaneer’s palm-lined beach. Participants can still register for the Coral Reef Swim here.
Officially named “Beauty & The Beast,” this year’s triathlon will mark the 30th year St. Croix has hosted athletes from around the world to swim, bike and run across island. The triathlon is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT) and hosted by VI TRI, a nonprofit organization, in partnership with the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism. Three races will be offered this year, including Long Distance Course, Sprint and a Sprint Aquathon. Relays will also be offered in the Long-Distance Course and Sprint Triathlon races. The race includes the 15 percent average grade bike climb that is known as “The Beast.”
Registration for the triathlon is still open, and a 30 percent discount is available to any athlete who was registered for a race cancelled by this year’s hurricane season. Entrants can register online (The pricing for registrants increases on October 29, 2018), and contestants can donate 30 percent of their registration cost to a nonprofit of their choice in a hurricane-affected area.
Participants can save at The Buccaneer by booking the resort’s Triathlon Package, which includes breakfast; beach gear equipment and accessories; introduction to SCUBA lesson; WiFi; Tuesday welcome cocktail party; and the resort’s Saturday evening kick-off Triathlon party. Ocean View Rooms start at $255 per person, per night, while Deluxe Oceanfront Rooms start at $335 per person, per night. A three-night minimum stay is required, and taxes are not included in these rates.
This year, race participants will be helping the local community after the devastating effects from Hurricane Maria in 2017. Beauty & The Beast will raise funds for local charities that were severely impacted by the storm, with proceeds benefiting the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center, My Brother’s Table and Caribbean Centers for the Boys & Girls of the Virgin Islands.
