Casa Carolina, a new lifestyle hotel in Cartagena’s historic Walled City, is now officially open.
Housed in a restored 16th-century colonial mansion, the boutique hotel offers 12 rooms and three suites, two outdoor pools, spa, wellness-focused cuisine, and a rooftop terrace with views of Cartagena’s cityscape including the iconic cathedral and the Governor’s Palace.
Steeped in history, Casa Carolina has witnessed Cartagena’s evolution for centuries. Originally built in the 16th century as part of the Santa Catalina de Alejandría Cathedral’s presbytery, the mansion retains its colonial architectural elements, including Coralina stone walls and historic murals. Over the years, it has served as a gathering place for Cartagena’s intellectual and artistic circles, most notably as the home of the renowned Café de la Nueva Granada in the 19th century. The restoration of the mansion preserves its architectural integrity, including original colonial paintings, hand-crafted wood details and intricate stonework. The design, led by local architects and artisans, integrates modern luxury with elements that reflect Cartagena’s heritage.
Casa Carolina’s culinary philosophy, led by Franco-Colombian chef Andrés Fernández León and resident chef Santiago Suárez, is rooted in honoring local traditions and sustainability. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the hotel’s Just B Wellness Café serves a menu of crafted organic coffee, drinks made with fresh ingredients and local tropical fruits as well as locally sourced dishes, including gluten- and dairy-free options. Every ingredient is chosen to support the body, local farmers and the environment. In partnership with El Barón, the rooftop terrace highlights a signature cocktail menu featuring innovative blends with local tropical fruits and spices, and reimagined classics.
The hotel’s spa specializes in both traditional and ayurvedic treatments, while the Yoga Shala offers a dedicated space for yoga and mindfulness practices.
