Civilian NYC, a new hotel concept by Jason Pomeranc, founder of the SIXTY Collective, the international hospitality company behind Sixty Hotels, is slated to open in New York’s Theater District this November. The brand's debut outpost aims to merge accessible luxury, functionality and high design with a focus on convenience and bespoke experiences for a modern traveler.
Designed by architect David Rockwell, and created in partnership with Joy Construction, Madd Equities and Atlas Hospitality, Civilian NYC will have 203 accommodations. Evoking a vintage dressing room, and a nod to the surrounding neighborhood, each space is punctuated with deep accent colors, as well as curated artwork and amenities.
The hotel’s public areas will include a restaurant, a "secret" garden accessed only from a concealed entry point, a guest lounge, a library with a bespoke collection and a rooftop bar with city views. Civilian's design pays homage to the look and feel of a classic theater, with marquee-inspired lighting, dramatic curtains, stage-like elements and the raw industrial materials of backstage life.
The hotel will allow guests to "stage-direct" their stay through their app, website and self-check-in kiosks. Guests who seek luxury can add amenities built into their rate or billed at the hotel and those simply looking for a place to lay their head can pare down their experience to the minimum. Options range from room type to Wi-Fi speed to food and beverage amenities and even opting out of housekeeping.
Central to Civilian NYC is the Olio Collection, a curated art program with permanent and rotating works by emerging and established theater creatives and contemporary Broadway photographers. Civilian will donate a portion of its daily fees to American Theatre Wing to help in its mission of support for the creatives affected by COVID. The hotel is looking to create a long-term partnership with ATW.
