Millennials with a love for art who are looking to take a dip at a pool located in one of the Dominican Republic’s hottest destinations should take a plunge at The Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando in the trendy capital of Santo Domingo.
The pool is small, intimate and is lined with chaise lounges. And there is even a tree to retreat under for shade when the Dominican rays become too much. The pool at Nicolas de Ovando Hotel has a view of the mouth of the Ozama River. Once the refuge of the discoverers of Hispaniola, it is now the safe port for cruise ships, private boats and cargo.
At night, the pool is lighted with color-changing LED lights. And no heating is necessarily at this pool, since the weather is warm and tropical all year round.
We were told there are no scheduled activities in the pool as the main goal here is to sit back and enjoy the water and sun.
And when guests are looking for a little pick-me-up, beside the pool and patio area is the hotel’s main bar. Food can be ordered a la carte and is brought in from the main kitchen. Popular items include “pinchos," which is spanish for kebabs. A plate of pinchos include the chicken and beef variety, along with “tostones” or fried plantains. This can be paired with a beer, which can be served so cold it will be covered in frost.
This historic building, which is listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, comprises three stone houses built in 1502. It bears the name of the first Spanish governor of the Americas and companion of Christopher Columbus, who resided in the Dominican Republic. And while this is a great fit for Millennials, Travel Agent also recommends pitching this hotel to Baby Boomers and all other generations who appreciate classic elegance.
