Habitas has announced its latest sustainable property with Habitas Atacama in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, known for its landscapes ranging from arid desert and salt flats to volcanoes, geysers and hot springs. At Habitas Atacama, guests can participate in outdoor adventures, including hiking, biking, mountaineering, paragliding and stargazing.
Upon completion in August 2023, the property will offer 51 rooms, each designed and styled with local textiles, decor and furnishings in keeping with Habitas’ philosophy of sourcing and supporting local businesses. The property will house a restaurant and bar offering local and seasonal ingredients, including those picked from the on-site native herb garden. Other facilities include a pool and wellness area, and a dedicated gathering space—a trademark communal offering at each of Habitas’ homes.
Sustainability will be of the highest priority throughout and, so, Habitas Atacama will be single-use plastic-free; it will also establish a water management plan, avoid the removal of any trees on the property, and even plant equal amounts of trees for the wood used during any and all construction. Habitas’ impact initiatives will further aim to promote social and environmental sustainability within local communities, supporting conscious tourism in Chile. The brand’s impact arm, RISE, will collaborate with local partners and initiatives to give back to the community by supporting cultural and environmental causes, and creating jobs for locals.
The Atacama desert is the largest fog desert in the world, and has over 300 cloudless nights a year. Ideal for stargazing and astronomy, the desert is home to some of the world’s biggest and most powerful telescopes and NASA observatories. Nearby attractions include Pukará de Quitor, a pre-Columbian archeological site; Mirador de Kari, a rocky mountain plateau with an overhanging rock and a great location to experience the sunset; El Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), known for its stone and sand formations carved by wind and water; and Licancabur, a stratovolcano on the border of Bolivia, believed to be a holy mountain by the Atacameno people, comprising part of the Andean Central Volcanic Zone, with a 19,409-foot-high cone.
Upon opening, Atacama will be the brand’s 11th “home” in the Habitas family, which includes properties in Tulum, Bacalar and San Miguel in Mexico, and soon-to-open Santa Teresa in Costa Rica, besides one-of-a-kind concepts in Namibia and Saudi Arabia’s AlUla. The brand has also expanded into the U.S. with Habitas-on-Hudson and Morocco with the recent launches of Caravan Agafay and Caravan Dakhla.
