Heavy rains caused the collapse of a hotel under construction in Puerto Juarez on Tuesday, multiple media outlets are reporting.
According to Riviera Maya News, the collapse happened around noon at a hotel under construction in the Puerto del Mar condominium complex. Nine people were injured, of whom seven were taken to area hospitals, and a further 200 were evacuated. The construction has been temporarily closed while a structural expert is brought in to review the building.
While the Riviera Maya News and other media have described the property as a Hyatt hotel, a Hyatt representative has confirmed to Travel Agent that the location is not under development as a Hyatt-branded hotel.
La Palabra del Caribe reports that the collapse involved three floors of the hotel when part of the slab of the 12th floor gave way. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, rescuing injured workers and evacuated workers and residents of the condominium complex.
According to La Jordana Maya, the construction project has drawn some opposition from other residents of the condominium complex. Residents have reportedly complained that the project could harm local mangroves, as well as violate the area’s Urban Development Plan.
