Hyatt has opened Hyatt Centric Sapporo, the brand’s first hotel on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido.

The 216-room property sits on the upper floors of a mixed-use tower in central Sapporo, next door to the former Hokkaido Government Office, the landmark locals call the Red Brick Building. Odori Park, home of the Sapporo Snow Festival, is close by. An underground walkway gets guests to Odori subway station in a few minutes, and JR Sapporo Station is roughly a 10-minute walk, which matters for clients heading on to Hokkaido’s ski resorts, hot springs, and national parks.

Across the 216 guestrooms and suites, each measuring 388 square feet and more, expansive windows invite natural light and frame the cityscape of Sapporo. (Hyatt)

Rooms start at 388 square feet. The design takes its cue from Takeshiro Matsuura, the explorer and cartographer credited with giving Hokkaido its name, and it shows up in reclaimed wood, straw artworks, a check-in counter built by a local artisan, and a fireplace lounge.

There are two places to eat. Matsu Grill & Bar on the 17th floor cooks Hokkaido seafood and produce over a wood fire with Mediterranean influences. On the ground floor, Mr. Fish by Hyatt Centric Sapporo serves fish and chips made with local white fish and potatoes, alongside craft beer and takeout items like fish burgers and churros.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Hyatt Centric brand to Sapporo, a dynamic destination where every season reveals a new side of Hokkaido,” said Yuki Takimura, the hotel’s general manager.
