Iberostar Hotels & Resorts has achieved its 100 percent renewable energy milestone in its hotels in Bahia, Brazil, becoming the first Iberostar hotels in the Americas to reach this goal. The complex, which has two hotels, Iberostar Selection Praia do Forte and Iberostar Bahia, and more than 1,000 rooms in all, employs more than 2,000 people and receives approximately 181,000 guests per year, consuming 21.217 MWh of electricity in 2022.
Building upon its success in Spain, the company is extending its model of responsible tourism to Brazil. Currently, all Iberostar hotels in Spain rely on electricity sourced exclusively from renewable energies, backed by a guarantee of origin. This initiative alone prevents the emission of over 18,000 tons of CO2eq annually. In Brazil, Iberostar is already making significant strides by preventing the release of more than 4,000 tons of CO2eq.
The Iberostar Praia do Forte Complex has utilized solar energy for select resources since 2010, and now the property is taking another important step to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint. Besides investing in renewable electricity, Iberostar has certified the origin of it through the i-REC (Renewable Energy Certificate). The company’s commitment to being free of fossil fuels is well underway, and the plan stipulates that these fuels will be fully replaced by renewable energy.
Recognizing that clean energy is the sole viable option for a sustainable energy future, Iberostar is steadfast in its dedication to promoting the adoption of renewable energies. The company actively supports the advancement of technologies such as green hydrogen in Spain, while also striving to inspire the private sector to embrace and integrate renewable energy sources on a larger scale. By pursuing these initiatives, Iberostar aims to facilitate the integration of renewable components into the global energy grid, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
In 2020, Iberostar Group launched its sustainability commitments, advancing a model of responsible tourism based on the following major objectives to be met during this decade:
- Become waste free by 2025 and carbon neutral by 2030 (20 years ahead of the global industry target)
- Source 100 percent of seafood from responsible sources by 2025
- Ensure all ecosystems surrounding Iberostar's properties are improving in ecological health alongside profitable tourism by 2030
