Whiskey lovers looking for their next stay may want to check out The Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach, a member of Marriott’s boutique Autograph Collection.
The hotel is set to open a new onsite distillery, Tarnished Truth, from Andrew Yancey and Josh Canada. Billed as a revival of the golden era of the roaring 20s and an homage to American whiskey’s roots in the great American south, Tarnished Truth brings new and returning guests of the Cavalier a selection of three different whiskies and a vodka—to start—as well as personalized whiskey barrels for aging. In addition to offering bottled craft spirits available for sale, Tarnished Truth will offer private tours, a tasting room, and an attached restaurant and bar offering signature cocktails and cocktail classes.
Virginians have been distilling whiskey since the 17th century, and Tarnished Truth Distillery continues the tradition with their three distinct whiskies—Tarnished Truth Bourbon, Tarnished Truth Rye, and Old Cavalier Bourbon—as well as Ava Vodka. Yancey and co-founder Josh Canada saw a need for a distillery in the region (at the time of ideation, there weren’t any), and chose The Cavalier as the perfect location.
“Tarnished Truth will be the first distillery in North America fully integrated into a hotel,” said Canada in a written release. “We chose The Cavalier specifically because we feel the longstanding history of the property resonates with our brand.”
Tarnished Truth spirits will be available for sale in the distillery’s on-site retail shop and Virginia ABC stores, with plans to expand to neighboring states in the near future.
After a more than $75-million renovation, the Cavalier Hotel will reopen at the end of the fourth quarter of 2017.
