Kauai Floods: Hanalei Colony Resort to Remain Closed

Hanalei Colony Resort has announced it will remain closed until further notice due to a severe storm in April that caused landslides and flash floods in the area.

According to the latest statement from the resort, all reservations through September 1, 2018, will be cancelled and refunded in full to the credit card on file within 21 business days. Additional cancellation dates are pending the progression of recovery in flood affected areas, the resort said.

Presidential, Gubernatorial, and Mayoral proclamations have designated the resort and surrounding communities of Lumahaʻi -Wainiha- Hāʻena disaster areas following April’s devastating flooding and severe landslides. Recently, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho issued a 60-day extension to the original disaster proclamation. Included was a caveat suggesting that further extensions may be forthcoming. The resort and the northernmost communities of Kaua‘i continue to navigate through intensive disaster recovery operations, the resort said.

The disaster proclamation additionally extends an emergency rule prohibiting Hanalei Colony Resort and all area accommodations from operating transient vacation rentals to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people.

Kuhio Highway, the main through-fare leading to the resort and surrounding communities, is still closed with intermittent access for credentialed full-time residents only and vehicle weight restrictions are being strictly enforced.

After a thorough evaluation of the resort post-flood, reports indicate that substantial damage was sustained to its facilities. Wide-ranging restoration efforts and repairs will be ongoing for at least several months as supplies and non-essential utility crews are delayed from reaching the resort as a result of vehicle weight limitations. The resort’s phone service was also compromised and is currently unreliable.
