Kempinski appointed Michael J. Schoonewagen as the general manager of its upcoming Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski Dominica. Opening in 2019, the property will be the hotel brand’s first luxury resort in Dominica.
Schoonewagen will bring 30 years of experience in the hotel business to his new position as general manager. Throughout his career he worked with luxury brands throughout Europe, the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. Schoonewagen and his team, in close partnership with Range Developments, will aim to make the property a go-to destination in the region.
Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski Dominica will be located near Cabrits National Park, providing easy access to the island’s natural sites. Dominica, situated within the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles region, has 365 rivers, waterfalls and hot springs.
The property will join the recently opened Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana as part of Kempinski’s efforts to expand its presence in the region. Welcoming guests since last year, the Cuban hotel was the first luxury five-star hotel in the country.
In business since 1897, Kempinski Hotels now operates 75 five-star hotels and residences. Currently spread across 33 countries, the brand is still adding new locations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Kempinski Hotels is a founding member of the largest alliance of independent hotels, the Global Hotel Alliance.
