Nayara Resorts has announced that all three of its Costa Rican properties have received official certification from international sustainability certification body Green Globe. The properties include Nayara Tented Camp, Nayara Gardens and Nayara Springs.
Developed over three decades, the Green Globe seal encompasses 44 criteria and 380 indicators aligned with international frameworks, including the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Nayara Resorts worked with Green Globe auditors to enhance the properties’ existing eco-infrastructure and sustainability initiatives, further safeguarding the biodiverse Nayara Reserve, building on the brand’s commitment to uplifting the local community, and demonstrating its commitment to delivering sustainable guest experiences. Additionally, Nayara Bocas del Toro in Panama already holds Green Globe certification and Nayara Alto Atacama in Chile holds the “S Certification for Sustainable Tourism” from the Chilean government.
Since debuting in Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano National Park more than a decade ago, Nayara Resorts has been a driving force in bringing ecotourism to the region. Spanning 30,000 acres of rainforest, the area has become a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. It is home to half the species of birds, mammals and reptiles found in Costa Rica. Nayara has played a critical part in the destination’s success and overall conservation efforts, having created a sanctuary for sloths and reforested large swaths of land that were cleared for cattle ranchers.
To achieve Green Globe certification, Nayara Resorts had to meet high standards across Green Globe’s four pillars: sustainable management; social and economic performance; cultural heritage; and environmental stewardship. Certification must be renewed annually, requiring Nayara and other Green Globe-certified members to demonstrate continuous improvement by achieving higher compliance scores during each on-site audit.
This milestone builds on Nayara’s broader commitment to sustainability, including being certified carbon-neutral by the third-party sustainability consulting firm Eco Qualis. All of Nayara’s Costa Rican resorts are plastic-free, and the majority of staff come from the neighboring town of La Fortuna. Employees receive free transportation to work, education on sustainable tourism practices, and access to early childhood education for their children.
In a move to further support its workforce, Nayara recently partnered with a local bank to create a housing community for its employees. This initiative enables workers to purchase homes without a down payment, immediately building equity while maintaining ownership of their homes even if they leave the company.
