From last year’s crop of major openings to a new, Nobu-branded property in Los Cabos this year, here’s a look at the new luxury hotels in Mexico to watch in 2019.
New this spring will be the Nobu Hotel Los Cabos. With sales and marketing spearheaded by AIC Hotel group, the new hotel will have a signature Nobu Restaurant, as well as its own outpost of Malibu Farm, a famous, farm-to-table restaurant from Malibu. In terms of accommodations, expect an emphasis on natural materials, as well as a “contemporary and elegant” look drawing from the brand’s Japanese roots and the hotel’s beachside location, across its 200 rooms and suites. There will also be a desert botanical park, a five-acre Spa Alkemia and shops.
The new Nobu property joins a lineup of luxury hotels that opened in Mexico just last year:
Chablé Resort Maroma opened in September 35 minutes from Cancun International Airport. The all-suite property, which is part of Leading Hotels of the World (LHW), has 68 suites and two villas, each with private pools, outdoor living areas, terraces and a number of other exclusive amenities. Also on property is a 17,000-square-foot-spa and a pool lying parallel to Maroma’s private, white-sand beach. A spa highlight is the Tree of Life Massage, a four-hand massage that aims to act as a balancing treatment reflecting the constant swing between life’s polarities. Cuisine here emphasizes locally caught or grown products.
Montage Los Cabos opened in May on the Golden Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The first property outside the United States for the Montage brand, it has 122 guestrooms and suites in native materials and an earth-tone color scheme. Guests can also enjoy access to The Fred Couples Signature Golf Course, a 21,000-square-foot Spa Montage and fitness center, the Paintbox immersive children’s program and dining options specializing in local seafood.
Finally, travelers this year can also check out two properties that celebrated official openings in 2017, but continued to grow in popularity throughout 2018:
Rosewood Puebla, Rosewood’s fourth property in Mexico, is set near the “zocalo,” or cultural, religious and political center, of the historic town (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) of Puebla. It has 78 rooms and suites drawing heavy design inspiration from the art and architecture of the region, plus three dining venues, a spa and a rooftop bar. Also of note are a number of furnishings and works from Mexican artists and artisans, including Talavera pottery, plus a spa and a rooftop infinity pool with views of the city’s downtown district and surrounding volcanoes.
UNICO 20˚87˚ Hotel Riviera Maya is an adults-only, all-inclusive property with 448 guestrooms aimed at Millennial travelers. These predominantly have ocean views, with semi-private swim-up pools on all ground floor rooms and outdoor double-hyro spa tubs on the remaining rooms. Guestrooms also have an in-room mini bar with cocktail fixings stocked based on guest preference. Also on property are three pools, a wellness center, a spa with 18 cabins, five restaurants and six bars and lounges, including a cigar lounge and two swim-up bars. Guests will also be able to purchase art from local artisans both in-room and throughout the property. Other amenities include the Esencia Beauty Bar, located in the Esencia Wellness area, where guests can select their own personalized in-room amenities made with local ingredients.
