There have been a number of new travel developments in Cancun this summer. Here’s what you need to know.
In July the Club Med Cancún Yucatán opened a new expansion to its Aguamarina family zone, doubling the area’s size with the addition of 60 new rooms and a new pool. The new rooms include 30 Club Rooms and 30 Deluxe Rooms, both of which have two bedrooms and oceanfront views. The new pool has space for water games, lounging and outdoor activities, plus a new family bar, La Marina. There is also a new reception area and concierge service. All told, the expansion brings Aguamarina’s capacity to 120 families.
Also this summer Marriott International launched a new augmented reality (AR) app that could serve to get clients excited about the destination. The new app, Portal to Paradise, allows users to take a 360-degree tour of the Marriott Cancun Resort and the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa. Additionally, whoever downloads the app through August 15 will have a chance of winning a seven-night trip for two to their choice of one of eight Marriott Caribbean and Latin America resorts. The app is now available for iOS, and also includes tours of the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino, Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa, JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa, Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort and St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino.
In air travel news, this summer Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) inked an investment deal for Cancun International Airport’s fifth terminal, which is set to begin construction at the end of this year or the beginning of the next. The move follows October’s opening of the new Terminal Four, which increased the airport’s capacity to up to 25 million passengers and helped fuel a record-setting Easter travel period for the destination.
Finally, looking ahead, the destination is set to get a new boutique hotel this October. That month Spanish hotel group Hipotels will open the first property for its Haven Resorts & Spas brand: the Haven Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa. Set 15 minutes from the airport, the adults-only beachfront resort will have 333 suites, 109 of which will be oceanfront and 88 of which will be swim-out. Each suite will have either a terrace with a plunge pool or a whirlpool tub. Also on site will be a large Jacuzzi and three pools, as well as one main and four a la carte restaurants, as well as nine bars – two of which will be swim-up.
