The first hotel from Hilton’s boutique Curio Collection is now open in Mexico City. The 59-room Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton is in a restored heritage building, constructed in 1924, in the city’s downtown area, overlooking a number of famous landmarks: the Metropolitan Cathedral, the County Hall and El Palacio de Hierro Department Store.
Guests will also have convenient access to Zocalo Main Square two blocks away, as well as Museo del Templo Mayor, Chapultepec and Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez, all of which are less than five miles from the property.
Designed by local architect Javier Sanchez, Umbral is done in a minimalistic style in neutral tones of white, beige and brown, as well as natural materials such as light and dark woods. All 59 guest rooms are comprised of two distinct environments – a darker intimate entrance that leads to a light guest room through a golden frame, symbolizing an umbral. Each of the 12 suites also offers a record player with a personalized vinyl collection – based on guests’ preferences – through a partnership with local vinyl shop La Roma Records.
Hilton said that Umbral is the only hotel in the city with an on-site gallery, housing more than 100 pieces of art by local artists such as Jorge Montiel, Andrea Vores and Tomas Diaz. Next to the gallery is a library with a curated selection of literature; a sound library with a vinyl record player; and a cinema, playing culturally immersive movies as well as foreign titles, often reflecting the selection from local film festivals.
The property also has a 375-square-foot room for intimate meetings and events for up to eight guests and a rooftop terrace for outdoor functions of up to 150 attendees. The terrace also has an outdoor heated pool, fitness center and a Wellness Bar serving a variety of fresh smoothies and juices like Deep Detox and spinach-mint or a wellness apple ginger shot, as well as a bar and restaurant: the Terraza Umbral Bar, conceptualized by the owners of locally renowned bar Limantour and serving a menu of seasonal cocktails based on Mexican spirits. The bar’s signature cocktail, Independencia, is made with mezcal, lemon juice, passion fruit juice and campari.
Dining options also include Terraza Umbral Restaurant, which incorporates local flavors into traditional dishes such as Duck & Sirloin Tacos, Tropical Ceviche and Shrimp Toasts.
Finally, the hotel’s Experience Curator will help guests immerse themselves in the local culture through unique itineraries based on their preferences.
To celebrate its opening, Umbral has launched two special offers for guests. Through December 30, 2019, travelers can take advantage of The Cross Over the Umbral package, which includes overnight accommodations, two signature Independencia cocktails at the Terraza Umbral Bar, breakfast for two on the hotel’s rooftop and a $50 dining credit. Additionally, guests who book stays between August 31 and December 1 will earn 1,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points per night; the offer is valid through December 1, 2019.
