Masseria Calderisi, Puglia has reopened its doors, welcoming guests for its first full season. Launched in spring 2021, the newly revived family-owned boutique hotel is set amid eight hectares of olive and citrus groves in the Puglian countryside.
The renovated 17th-century farmhouse is arranged around an expansive central piazza; with just 24 guestrooms and suites, each has its private terrace or garden. The original stable block was converted into five suites, lined by private patios and olive trees. The Il Fortino suite lies beside a private walled garden and pool. Above the farmhouse, the Tower suite has access to a private rooftop terrace, with views of the Adriatic coast.
Open for breakfast and dinner, La Corte offers contemporary Apullian meals. Chef Pietro Sgaramella bakes bread, cakes and focaccia in the centuries-old stone oven, besides freshly fired pizzas. In the evening, aperitifs are served on the Apero terrace with decorative lanterns and cushioned corners. The chef hosts pizza, parmigiana and pasta-making classes followed by an al fresco lunch. Guests can participate in wine and olive oil tasting sessions or go on a private, guided gastronomic cycle tour to a nearby dairy farm, an olive oil-making masseria and the coastal town of Savelletri. Guests can also hop on one of the hotel’s complimentary bicycles to explore the grounds and neighboring farms and villages. Private boat trips can also be arranged.
Guests have access to Calderisi Beach, a private strip of sand equipped with sun loungers and parasols, offering drinks and light bites. A complimentary 10-minute shuttle service operates to and from the hotel; and each room is stocked with a Calderisi beach bag and towels.
Back at the hotel, a dry-stone wall shelters a 59-foot pool, surrounded by tufa stone, checkered strips of grass and sun loungers under the shade of lemon and orange trees. Tables, chairs and umbrellas line the Gioia Pool Bar, where guests can enjoy salads, pizzas and pasta along with all-day beverages. An intimate spa featuring two treatment rooms offers a range of treatments using organic products, as well as local olive oil and herbs from the garden. Complimentary rooftop yoga classes are also available.
The historic towns of Monopoli, Fasano and Ostuni are within a 30-minute radius, and a protected national park is an hour to the south. Several UNESCO-protected sites are within easy reach from the masseria, including the trulli in the nearby town of Alberobello.
Good to know: Masseria Calderisi is available to rent exclusively for weddings and parties for up to 60 guests. The Moroccan-style tent pitched in the olive groves is also available for private events. A fully restored on-site chapel that overlooks the piazza can be used for ceremonies such as weddings and baptisms.
The masseria was built in 1658 and served as an olive oil producer for centuries. Today, 300 olive trees grow in the property's grounds; the oldest trees have stood there for 700 years, predating the masseria itself. The olives are harvested each year to make oil, and the hotel is in the process of becoming a certified organic olive oil producer. An ancient olive mill, used to grind the estate’s olives for centuries, rests below ground.
An onsite boutique stocks pieces from Italian designer brands such as Etro, Max Mara, Valentino and Missoni, as well as ceramics made in the nearby town of Grottaglie. The boutique also sells products made at the masseria, including organic olive oil, fruit jam and taralli, a traditional Puglian snack.
