Seadust Cancun Family Resort is launching its property-wide Waste Separation Program to commemorate Earth Day—the world’s largest environmental movement.
The goal of the program is to reduce waste production by abiding by local sustainability regulations, developing ecological initiatives to recycle and revalue as many materials as possible while maintaining guests’ experiences as the primary concern. The company’s program also anticipates exceeding the 35,000 pounds of waste recycled last year via the beginning stage of the Waste Separation Program.
According to the United Nations Statistics Division, Mexico recycles at a rate of three percent, compared to 24 percent in the United States. This positions Mexico 20 years behind the United States in its ability to recycle waste, which inspired Seadust Cancun to act and develop the Waste Separation Program.
As the first phase of the program, the resort will stop using disposable containers like cups, plates and bowls. Next, Seadust Cancun will seek to eliminate the use of plastic straws by providing them only to guests who specifically request them. Ending the use of plastic straws and disposable containers will reduce the use of chemicals found in single-use containers and help lower the amount of contamination in Cancun. Finally, the Waste Separation Program encourages hotel staff to recycle waste by providing respective bins, along with educational signage throughout the property educating guests and staff on recycling regulations and tips.
After the official announcement of the Waste Separation Program to commemorate Earth Day, the Cancun resort is planning to carryout tactics to reduce emissions by updating the resort’s equipment, increasing the use of clean energy throughout the property, implementing solar panels, and decreasing the resort’s use of water.
In other Earth Day news, Expedia has listed the top eco-friendly stays around the world. The rankings are based on more than eight million traveler reviews.
