Silver Sands Motel Reopens on Long Island's North Fork

Silver Sands Motel and Beach Bungalows is reopening this summer after a renovation, welcoming guests back to the shores of Pipes Cove in Greenport, NY.

Sitting on 1,400 feet of private, sandy beach facing Shelter Island, the waterfront property from the 1950s will reopen its doors with 20 motel rooms, adding bungalow accommodations with one to five bedrooms throughout the rest of the year, all surrounded by landscaping and bay views.

The Motel Rooms are a mix of old and new with a nod to their past roots. All rooms are equipped with a lounge area and spacious bathrooms. Rooms on the east wing include private, gated gardens that look out to the salt marsh. The studio and one-bedroom Beach Shacks are set on the beachfront or tucked under old trees, and have a private screened-in porch and outdoor rain shower. The one- and two-bedroom Bungalows have living areas, reading nooks and outdoor living spaces work for couples and small families.

Silver Sands' culinary offerings draw inspiration from the North Fork and the Mediterranean. Outlets will include the restoration of Silver Sands’ original diner, located on the southwest corner of the motel. Summer and early fall guests will also be able to experience weekend cookouts under the stars with wood oven-fired Neapolitan pizza, fresh seafood and local produce.

Silver Sands is also home to 15 acres of private underwater land, and will be relaunching Pipes Cove Oysters in partnership with Oysterponds Shellfish Company.

Gardens and plantings were added to promote biodiversity and attract pollinators, while select rooms offer bird-watching binoculars to encourage guests to immerse themselves in the property’s surroundings. The motel strives to have a small carbon footprint, using only organic and fair-trade products, promoting ethical design and reducing water use. By eliminating all connections to fossil fuels, oil and natural gas, the property reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, and intends to be an integral and responsible part of the North Fork community.
