Hospitality investment firm LionGrove has announced a series of transformative upgrades in an upcoming multimillion-dollar transformation of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Beach & Golf Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The project, led by LionGrove alongside hospitality and destination design firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, is transforming and elevating the 12-plus-acre resort.
The update, which will take place over the coming months, will include the full reconstruction of all 400 guestrooms, 10 culinary outlets, a revamped lobby and porte cochere, new pool experiences, modern social and nightlife spaces, and innovative programming. The renovation will ensure minimal disruption to guests, with the first set of new offerings rolling out before the holidays in December.
The transformation will occur across three planned unveilings. The first phase, scheduled for this winter, will introduce two new pools, including a zero-entry pool and an adult pool, along with new cabanas. Guests will also experience a newly renovated porte cochere and lobby, enhancing the arrival experience with a new observation deck. The second phase, in January 2025, will include newly designed guestrooms and suites, and will introduce a new healthy, all-day café concept. Finally, the third and final phase in fall 2025 will debut three new signature restaurants, the resort’s new Xplorers Club, the opening of a racquet center and other wellness offerings.
Set at the base of El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Beach & Golf Resort offers a an experience that combines a protected rainforest and a beachfront. The newly renovated guestrooms at the resort will be inspired by the landscapes of El Yunque and the Atlantic Ocean. In-room amenities will include coffee stations and a modern entertainment center. The bathrooms will come with rainfall shower heads, marble vanities and gold-accented fixtures.
On the culinary side, new additions will include a new signature restaurant serving modern Spanish cuisine, an omakase concept and a cabaret-style lounge adjacent to the resort’s casino that will enhance the resort's nightlife offerings.
In terms of other amenities, three of the resort's four unique swimming areas will be redesigned, including a new adults-only pool with curated relaxation amenities, and an immersive pool experience crafted specifically for children and families. This space faces the Atlantic Ocean and will offer a variety of engaging water slide elements and activities for all ages.
A key highlight of the resort’s transformation is the introduction of the Xplorers Club, an innovative activity program inspired by the natural wonders of El Yunque National Rainforest. This program, led by newly appointed Environmental Scientist Ashley Perez, offers immersive educational experiences for guests of all ages. Participants can engage in activities ranging from kayaking on the Mameyes River to exploring the region’s diverse ecosystems and stargazing. The program also includes citizen science initiatives, interactive exhibits and art activities.
The hotel will also offer over 100,000 square feet of versatile function space, including one of the Caribbean's largest ballrooms.
