Mexico’s minister of tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, and the governor of the state of Yucatán, Mauricio Vila Dosal, announced that in order to carry out a bio-healthy and safe Tianguis Turistico, the event will be held in Merida from November 16 to 19 of this year.
The decision to move the 45th edition of Mexico’s largest tourism event from September to November was made to ensure the destination and the locations that will host the events of the Tianguis are following the latest sanitary measures set by health officials, allow for more participants to be vaccinated, both in Mexico and globally, which will allow for a greater attendance of international buyers.
Torruco Marqués cited Spain as an example, where the Feria Internacional de Turismo (FITUR) was recently held, which sent a very clear message to the world tourism sector—that an event of this magnitude can be held now as long as bio-sanitary measures established by the competent authorities in the matter are respected.
Secretary Torruco Marqués and Governor Vila Dosal specified that they are working on logistics that allow the event to be an area free of COVID-19, by implementing all the preventive measures and protocols indicated by both the World Health Organization and Mexico’s Ministry of Health. They stressed that the priority will be safety; therefore, a first measure will be that, without exception, all attendees must perform an antigen test, which, when negative, will allow access to the event. This test will be linked to the attendee’s badge and, if someone has not applied it or has a positive result, they will not be able to access the venue, or the meetings related to the Tianguis.
Michelle Fridman Hirsch, tourism minister of the state of Yucatan (Sefotur) said in a written statement, “We have in front of us the enormous opportunity to make this the starting point for the recovery and reinvention of our sector; we have the opportunity to reinvent the Tianguis as the great showcase of Mexico for the world, according to the latest trends and global needs.”
