Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquín González has updated the epidemiological traffic light system in the state, announcing that for the week of September 7, through Sunday, September 13, the northern region of the state—which includes the tourist destinations of Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos and Holbox—will be yellow, thus allowing for more reopening of public spaces. The southern region will remain orange. This transition is mainly due to two key factors: The decrease in active cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the region’s medical and hospital capacity.
This represents a positive development in the economic and tourist recovery of the region, which will now allow an occupancy of up to 60 percent in hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, theme parks, spas, beaches and golf courses, among other travel services and public spaces. Archaeological sites and public beaches will also reopen. Nightlife and casinos remain closed, while groups and conventions now have a limit of 50 people.
Joaquín González pointed out that during the transition to yellow, the reactivation must be gradual, orderly and responsible, without relaxing health and hygiene measures in order to protect local citizens as well as travelers. Protecting the public’s health remains the top priority in this reopening strategy, he said. The next step, the green light, means a full reopening.
Since the beginning of the health crisis, the state authorities of Quintana Roo, including the Tourism Board, implemented strict hygiene and sanitation protocols to guarantee the health and wellbeing of all its citizens and visitors; from airports, ground transportation, hotels, restaurants and recreational centers.
