Travel agency executives and industry advocates headed to Washington D.C. for the 2019 ASTA Legislative Day, together with the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). The event was hosted at The Mayflower Hotel.
Legislative Day is a members-only event within the broader ASTA Capitol Summit connecting travel industry leaders with members of Congress to address the affairs impacting business, work life, and even the client’s travel experience. Travel advisors are trained prior to the Congressional meetings pre-scheduled by ASTA to become advocates for their profession.
More than 160 travel advisors from across the country went to Capitol Hill, sharing ASTA’s position on pressing issues facing the corporate and leisure travel economy. According to ASTA’s website, topics debated included industry education and independent contractor harmonization. Top actors in the travel industry were present at ASTA’s Legislative Day, with over 150 House and Senate Congressional meetings scheduled.
ASTA is a leading professional travel trade organization in the world. Its members comprise more than 80 percent of agency sales. Its current membership consists of nearly 10,500 domestic travel agency and allied travel companies.
Last year ASTA members garnered Congressional support, specifically from Senator Mike Lee of Utah, for the removal of new consumer disclosures contained in the Senate version of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill. The move saved the industry $29.8 million per year in “talk time” and lost sales.
