Beaches will remain popular, but nature-focused getaways are on the rise this Fourth of July travel weekend, according to a new study from vacation rental company Vacasa. The report found that 48 percent of Americans are planning to travel over the long holiday weekend this year.
According to the study, most Americans will head to the beach this year (70%), but National Parks and hiking spots came in a close second, at 69 percent. Most, or 64 percent, will take a road trip to their destinations.
Most travelers will be keeping their trips local this year, according to Vacasa, with 28 percent exploring their home region and 22 percent staying in state. Thirty-three percent, though, will opt for a cross-country trip.
Looking at summer travel more generally, the majority of Americans – 60 percent – are planning on taking one week or more for their vacations this summer. The average budget is clocking in at $2,778, but for travelers who describe themselves as “high rollers,” who make up 16 percent of the population, that figure could top $6,000.
In terms of destinations, Italy is hot this summer, although there’s plenty of emphasis on domestic travel as well. The top 10 summer destinations, according to Vacasa’s report, are:
- Rome, Italy
- San Diego, CA
- Milan, Italy
- Seattle, WA
- Honolulu, HI
- Miami, FL
- New Orleans, LA
- Playa del Carmen, Mexico
- Kissimmee, FL
- Portland, OR
When they get to their destinations, travelers plan to prioritize spending quality time with the family (28%), having fun (23%) or celebrating a special occasion (6%). Checking out local attractions (28%), hitting up the local beach life (27%) and visiting friends or family (24%) top the list of things to do.
