It’s Memorial Day weekend, which means the official start of the summer travel season. The Travel Channel has released a new study, conducted in February by the Travel Channel and Open Mind Strategy, outlining the top trends to watch this summer.
Multiple short trips will be on trend this summer, according to the report, as Americans opt for weekend getaways over longer vacations. In the study 55 percent of respondents said that they prefer several summer weekend getaways over one long summer vacation, and 53 percent said that they plan to take weekend trips on a monthly basis or more.
Road trips are also set to remain popular. Eighty-one percent of those interviewed in the survey said that they would love to take a road trip, rising to 87 percent among respondents with kids.
In terms of accommodations, home rentals are on the rise, particularly for family travel, the Travel Channel says. Seventy-seven percent of respondents said that they are interested in staying in a rental house during their vacation, 80 percent of who have kids.
As to where travelers are headed, relaxation is the name of the game. Fifty-five percent of respondents said that they prefer the countryside versus the city, while 63 percent opted for the beach over the mountains. Expense is also a major factor here, as over half of those polled who have kids said that staying in major cities is too expensive.
