Travelers can pedal through rolling vineyards, ancient towns and fishing villages on a new tour of Northern Spain’s Basque Country and Rioja wine region from Sojourn Bicycling & Active Vacations. Along the way, cyclists will taste wine and take in art at an acclaimed museum, enjoy bite-size pintxos and explore beaches. The six-day tour departs May 5, May 19, October 6 and October 13, 2019, starting at $4,595 per person based on double occupancy.
Cyclists will set out from Villabuena de Álava with a ride into Rioja, passing through towns and vineyards in the shadow of the Sierra de Cantabria. Next, they’ll pedal to the 10th century fortress of San Vicente de la Sonsierra on the way to San Sebastián on the Atlantic Coast. From there, they’ll ascend to the summit of Monte Igueldo to take in panoramic views, as well as visit Getaria, the home of explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, and the fishing village and port of Lekeitio. Finally, the cyclists will cross into French Basque Country, riding a coastal route to the popular beach resort of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Along the way, the cyclists will taste wines and view art by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol and more at the Vivanco Winery and Museum, enjoy Basque pintxos and classic Spanish dishes, stroll resort town beaches, and stay in the modern Hotel Viura in Villabuena de Álava and Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastián.
